2:0 defeat

FC beaten by BVB

1. FC Köln fell to a 2:0 loss against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday afternoon at the RheinEnergieSTADION. Thorgan Hazard and Steffen Tigges were on target for the hosts, as efficiency prevailed despite a good FC performance.

Team news

Marco Rose, who has had to battle injury problems of late, opted for four alterations from the Pokal game on Tuesday. Gregor Kobel, Manuel Akanji, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus replaced Marwin Hitz, Emre Can, Steffen Tigges and Reiner.

Steffen Baumgart made six changes to the team which started against Stuttgart on Wednesday evening. Timo Horn, Benno Schmitz, Luca Kilian, Mark Uth, Ondrej Duda and Anthony Modeste all returned to their spots in the starting line-up in place of Marvin Schwäbe, Kingsley Schindler, Jorge Meré, Tomas Ostrak, Louis Schaub and Sebastian Andersson.

Behind at the break despite strong start

FC were the better side from the start against BVB. Benno Schmitz’s cross was gathered by Gregor Kobel before Jan Thielmann fired straight at the returning Swiss stopper. Mark Uth then had a goal ruled out for handball after a strong run and finish. Ondrej Duda almost scored what would have been Goal of the Season, only to see his effort from the half-way line clawed away by Kobel.

Dortmund then started to make inroads but were still limited to few openings. Marco Reus skewed wide for a throw-in five yards out, with Timo Horn rarely called into action but for Thomas Meunier’s low drive. Despite FC’s dominance, it was Dortmund who went ahead. Jude Bellingham’s clever cross found the head of Thorgan Hazard, who managed to flick into the back of the net from six yards.

Tigges heads home as efficiency prevails

Despite the half-time break, FC’s rhythm held after the restart. A flurry of chances fell at the beginning of the second period. Anthony Modeste was at the heart of every move, bringing two good saves out of Kobel before Mark Uth glanced Benno Schmitz’s cross wide and fired off target after Jonas Hector’s cut-back. It was a question of when and not if an equaliser would come.

However, Dortmund were more efficient on the day and FC were made to pay. Julian Brandt’s corner was met at the near post by Steffen Tigges, who grabbed his first Bundesliga goal with a glancing header. From there on, FC remained dangerous. Modeste and Sebastian Andersson had openings to get Steffen Baumgart’s side back into the game but it just wasn’t meant to be.

FC are next in action at home to Union Berlin on Sunday 7th November. Kick-off is at 17:30 CET. Before that, however, FC will find out their opponents in the next round of the DFB-Pokal on Sunday evening.
