1. FC Köln have successfully passed the DFL’s licencing process despite the economic challenges due to the corona pandemic. The club will receive an unconditional licence for both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga for the 2021-22 season.
“It is an absolutely positive sign that we have earned the licence for the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga without conditions – and that despite the considerable loses caused by the pandemic. With that, we can approach next season financially stable. Nevertheless, there is still an enormous cost disciplined required of us. That being said, we would like to thank our banks for the trusting and constructive co-operation,” said FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle.
In the licencing process, the DFL do not only check economic performance, but also infrastructural, legal, personnel, administrative, media-technical and sporting criteria that the licensees must meet. The DFL can grant the licence and right to play subject to certain conditions or make it dependent on conditions that must be met before the licence is granted.
