Matchday 2

FC-Frauen’s first home game

1. FC Köln Frauen welcome TSG Hoffenheim to Franz-Kremer-Stadion on Sunday afternoon, hoping to build on their first point of the season against SGS Essen last weekend.

FC pick up point in Essen

With a difficult away trip to start the season, Sascha Glass’ side could hold their heads high after a 1:1 draw with SGS Essen. Hometown striker, Mandy Islacker grabbed the goal from the spot as she continued on her good form from the Pokal win a week previous. FC are now aiming to use that momentum against another tough challenge, as TSG Hoffenheim come to town.

It will be a family atmosphere at Franz-Kremer-Stadion this weekend, with FC hosting a family day to encourage even more fans into the stadium. Nicole Bender, FC Sporting Director, said: “We are really looking forward to our first game at home and hope that lots of supporters come to support the team and create a great atmosphere.”

Hoffenheim flying high

FC take on a Hoffenheim side in fine form, despite some sizeable summer departures. Lena Lattwein and Tabea Waßmuth made their way to Pokal winners, VfL Wolfsburg. German champions, Bayern Munich, managed to pry away Janina Leitzig and Maximiliane Rall from Hoffenheim’s grasp. Some smart acquisitions mean that Gabar Gallai’s side have started the season as they left off last term.

A win in the league against SC Freiburg was sandwiched in between the successful start to Champions League qualification. After getting the better of Valur Reykjavik and AC Milan, Hoffenheim were drawn against European regulars, FC Rosengard. Undeterred, TSG picked up a 3:0 win in Sweden and have the perfect position heading into the second leg.

Jana Beuschlein was at Hoffenheim last season before making the move to FC. Despite being currently injured, she is looking forward to the game: “TSG have a really good team but it’s perhaps not the worst time to be playing against them now. With the Champions League games, they’ve had a busy week. If we play aggressively and come into the game confident, then we definitely won’t be hopeless.”
