FC Football School supports children and young people

FC help out in South Africa

1. FC Köln have expanded their partnership with Young Bafana in South Africa. FC will support coaches and players in South Africa and increase the quality of education for children and young people.

The social organisation, Young Bafana was founded in 2010 in the small town of Somerset West, close to Cape Town. The Young Bafana Soccer Academy has taken on the challenge of fighting against the social injustices related to poverty in South Africa. The academy enables education and sport programmes for South African children and young people, so that they can build up a base of skills and lead a life away from poverty. Young Bafana is dependent upon support and helping hands.

1. FC Köln is one of Young Bafana’s partners and have expanded their partnership this year. With help from 1. FC Köln Football School Heinz Flohe, coaches and players will be schooled and the quality of education within the Young Bafana Soccer Academy increased as a result. FC will also provide plenty of training videos for football development. There are also plans for a face-to-face discussion with the South African coaches and children as soon as the pandemic allows.

Herbert Zimmermann is also part of the project, a former FC player and current Football School coach. Zimmermann won the double with FC in 1978, and another two DFB-Pokal titles. He was part of the Germany squad for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and the 1980 European Championship winning side.

FC’s Lasse Sobiech supports Young Bafana

In the past, 1. FC Köln were already involved in helping Young Bafana with specific social projects. The FC Foundation collected football boots for the children and young people of the townships in Cape Town. Lasse Sobiech, who is currently on loan at FC Zürich, is a long-term supporter of Young Bafana. Training equipment such as goals, cones, bibs and poles were also bought. In terms of education, more of an effort is being made as to invest in English lessons for the children.

The Young Bafana Academy now have teams from under-12 to under-18 and have integrated school teams. Five players have already made the leap into first-team football or into the academy of a professional club. 1. FC Köln want to help out, in order to increase that number.
