5:0 defeat

Heavy Hoffenheim loss

1. FC Köln fell to a 5:0 defeat to TSG Hoffenheim on Friday evening at the PreZero Arena. Ihlas Bebou, Benno Schmitz’s own-goal, Christoph Baumgartner, Dennis Geiger and Stefan Posch rounded off a night to forget for FC.

Team news

Sebastian Hoeneß opted for three alterations following the defeat to Stuttgart, as the international break took its toll in a similar manner to the FC squad. Chris Richards, Kevin Vogt and Sargis Adamyan dropped to the bench in place of Stefan Posch, Kevin Akpoguma and Christoph Baumgartner.

Steffen Baumgart made three changes to the team that started against Fürth before the international break. Jonas Hector, Ellyes Skhiri and Ondrej Duda were replaced by Kingsley Ehizibue, Salih Özcan and Jan Thielmann. The former duo were both ruled out through illness and injury.

Bebou breakthrough

The opening stages of the game belonged to the hosts, who were keen to start the return to action with purpose. A sliced clearance allowed Andrej Kramaric the first chance of the game, only to see Timo Horn spread himself to make a superb point-blank stop. FC slowly started to find their way into the game but Sebastian Andersson’s cross was collected just before Mark Uth could head home.

The breakthrough for Hoffenheim came after 31 minutes, as Andrej Kramaric picked the ball up in space between the FC lines. He managed to slide in Ihlas Bebou, who sped around Timo Horn and slotted into an open goal. FC’s best chance of an equaliser came through Anthony Modeste, though he was inches away from making clean contact on Florian Kainz’s cross.

Hoffenheim push on after the break

The restart saw Hoffenheim quickly add to their lead. After FC failed to get the ball clear, Hoffenheim were able to bring the ball back into the FC area and Benno Schmitz was unfortunate to poke the ball into his own goal as he attempted to hack it away. The hosts doubled their lead two minutes later, as a similar build-up allowed Christoph Baumgartner to force home from close range.

Steffen Baumgart’s side tried to force a way back into the game but as Dennis Geiger finished off a move down the right, it was clear that it wouldn’t be FC’s day. Stefan Posch headed home a fifth three minutes before full-time in what was a forgettable 90 minutes from an FC point of view.

FC are next in action against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday 24th October in the RheinEnergieSTADION at 15:30 CEST.
