1. FC Köln had added to their coaching staff with a familiar face. Kevin McKenna, who was at FC between 2007 and 2014, will become assistant coach. After the end of his career, he took his first steps as a coach in the FC youth academy. He started off as assistant coach with the under-19s before Stefan Ruthenbeck brought him up to the first-team in December 2017. After the end of the 2017-18 season, the Canadian became U21 assistant coach. At the start of the 2019-20 campaign, the 41-year-old left FC after 12 years to join 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He was part of the Red Devils until September 2020 and will now return to FC.
“Kevin completes the coaching staff surrounding Steffen – with whom he played together with in Cottbus – André Pawlak and Rene Wagner. He knows FC and the Bundesliga and we are pleased that he is bringing his years of experience with him. With his emotional and passionate nature, he can motivate the boys and compliments brilliantly to André and Rene,” said Jörg Jakobs.
“I am really pleased to be back,” said Kevin McKenna. “Due to the Coronavirus, I was at home for a long time, and I am chomping at the bit for this new challenge. I still know a lot of the team, be it the players or the staff, and Steffen from our time together in Cottbus. I like the way he plays football and his approach; therefore I am really looking forward to working together.”
