Marcel Risse's contract terminated

Mach et joot, Cello!

1. FC Köln have terminated Marcel Risse’s contract.

1. FC Köln and Marcel Risse have mutually agreed to terminate the midfielder’s contract. Risse, who had already spent last season on loan at Viktoria Köln, will now make a permanent move to the other side of the Rhein.

“Cello’s importance and meaning for FC is hard to put into words, for me. As a former team-mate, I can say that he played a very important role both on and off the pitch for our team even though he wasn’t the loudest. Up until his injury, he wasn’t just a key player but also a huge role model for all the boys. Everyone connected to FC immediately associates him with the unforgettable derby goal, his very personable nature and his unmistakeable playing style that gave so much to FC,” said Thomas Kessler, Director of Football and former team-mate.

“We wish you the very, very best for the future, Cello. We are pleased that you are fit again – all the best on the other side of the Rhein! We hope to see you a couple of times in the RheinEnergieSTADION as well, of course,” added Kessler.

The 31-year-old will be given an official goodbye at the first home game where fans are permitted. “After all the years at FC and his strong performances, Marcel has deserved a fitting goodbye at home – with our fans and in front of the Südkurve,” said FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle. “As soon as we know for sure when that is possible, we’ll take a look at the fixtures for both clubs and work out a date. I can only agree with what Kess said. Thank you for everything and mach et joot!”

Marcel Risse was born on 17th December 1989 in Köln. The attacker began his footballing career with TuS Höhenhaus and Bayer Leverkusen, making his Bundesliga debut for the latter in 2008. He made his way to 1. FC Nürnberg (20 Bundesliga appearances) and 1. FSV Mainz 05 (56) before returning home to Köln. For 1. FC Köln, Risse made 97 Bundesliga appearances (11 goals, 20 assists), featured 52 times in 2. Bundesliga (10 goals, 10 assists) and played 13 games in the DFB-Pokal (five goals, two assists). He was promoted twice with the club and was part of the 2016-17 side that secured a place in the UEFA Europa League. It was in this season where he scored the “Tor des Jahres” against Gladbach and suffered his ACL tear.
