Sebastiaan Bornauw has departed from 1. FC Köln. The 21-year-old defender will move to VfL Wolfsburg. Both clubs have agreed to remain silent on the transfer details.
“We would have liked to keep Seb in Köln for another year. His development, since he joined us, was huge. And obviously very positive, he was a key player here straight away and earned his first cap for the Belgium national team. His goal is to establish himself there. Therefore, it was his desire to join Wolfsburg and play in the Champions League next season. After the intensive discussions with Wolfsburg, we came to a good agreement. We thank Seb for his efforts in the last two years and wish him all the best for the rest of his career,” said FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle.
“I am thankful for all of the memories that I have been able to experience here and want to thank all the staff, team-mates and, of course, the fans for the last two seasons. Since the day where I came to this great club, I have always felt your support. I will never forget the sound of a full RheinEnergieSTADION, that is incredible. I will always have a place for this club in my heart, but the time has come to move on,” said Sebastiaan Bornauw.
Sebastiaan Bornauw joined 1. FC Köln from RSC Anderlecht in the summer of 2019. Since then, the centre-back has made 52 Bundesliga appearances and scored seven goals. His most important was probably his left, as he headed home the winner against FC Schalke 04 to earn a place in the relegation play-off. Bornauw featured in both games, as FC secured their status in the top-flight.
