1:1 draw

Stalemate in Bielefeld

1. FC Köln secured a 1:1 draw against Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday afternoon against Arminia Bielefeld. Steffen Baumgart’s side went ahead thanks to Salih Özcan’s second goal in three games before Bryan Lasme levelled for Bielefeld in the second-half.

Team news

Frank Kramer opted for two alterations following Arminia’s narrow defeat in Munich to Bayern last weekend. Jacob Laursen and Fabian Kunze replaced Andrés Andrade and Fabian Kunze.

Steffen Baumgart made one change to the starting line-up from the Derby Day victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Jonas Hector missed out through injury and was replaced by Kingsley Schindler, with Benno Schmitz swapping over to the left.

Özcan makes the breakthrough

The game began with both sides keen to come forward and create opportunities. The first fell to FC and Anthony Modeste but his header was easily gathered by Stefan Ortega. The hosts responded in kind as Patrick Wimmer forced Marvin Schwäbe into action for the first time in the match.

As the game continued to go back-and-forth, it was FC who grabbed the lead. Rafael Czichos brought the ball down and was able to play a superb pass to Salih Özcan. After going 73 games without an FC Bundesliga goal, he grabbed his second in three matches as he slide the ball perfectly through Ortega’s legs in the 17th minute.

Bielefeld continued to press and came on strongly in the latter stages. Fabian Klos was clean through on goal only to be thwarted by Marvin Schwäbe excellent save. The dangerous Wimmer managed to wriggle away from Kingsley Schindler, though a superb sliding challenge from Luca Kilian managed to block his shot in the final second. Benno Schmitz made an incredible goal-line clearance from Klos’ header late on and allowed FC to head into the break with the lead.

Lasme levels as FC hang on

The hosts began the second-half as they ended the first. In a game with plenty of tackles and physical action, Schmitz and Wimmer were in the wars early on. Kingsley Schindler managed to clear in the final seconds but it only delayed what had been coming. A quick throw-in after a mistake at the back allowed Alessandro Schöpf to tee up Bryan Lasme, who powered into the bottom corner from 16 yards.

The remainder of the game saw Arminia on top but, aside from Wimmer’s effort that brought Schwäbe into action, it was largely fruitless. FC had two great chances to win the game, with Florian Kainz failing to connect cleanly on the volley before Dejan Ljubicic’s lung-bursting run was followed up by a pass across goal where no-one was to be found.

FC are next in action on Friday evening, as they welcome FC Augsburg to the RheinEnergieSTADION with kick-off at 20:30 CET.
