Matchday 14

The Number Crunch: At home against Augsburg

The Winter Break is over, 1. FC Köln are back in action tomorrow against FC Augsburg. After both games ended 1:1 last season, Markus Gisdol’s men are keen to start the year as they mean to go on. Here are 10 stats and facts to get you in the Matchday mood.

Anthony Modeste grabbed his first goal of the season for FC to secure progression to the next round of the DFB-Pokal. The Frenchman’s last Bundesliga goal came against Augsburg at the back end of last season, with his stunning volley helping to secure a point away from home.

Super Skhiri

Ellyes Skhiri’s impressive performance against RB Leipzig saw him record a further six interceptions, taking his tally this season to 35. Only Marc-Oliver Kempf and Diadie Samasssekou (both 38) have more to their name.

Sava-Arangel Cestic has enjoyed an impressive start to life in the Bundesliga and leads the Bundesliga in clearances per game. Cestic has averaged 5.5 clearances in his four appearances thus far.

Ismail Jakobs has averaged 41 sprints per game this season. Only Sven Schipplock (46) and Tanguy Coulibaly (43) can top the FC winger.

Saturday’s game will see two of the league’s best goalkeepers go head-to-head at the weekend. Rafal Gikiewicz and Timo Horn are both in the top five shot-stoppers for save percentage this season. The Pole is second (72%) behind Peter Gulacsi, with Timo Horn joint-fifth on 68%.

Two of the Bundesliga’s sides with the least possession go head to head at the weekend. FC have averaged 42.3% possession this season, with Augsburg just ahead on 44%.

FCA will be hoping to continue their excellent form against FC. After Lukas Podolski’s brace earned a 3:0 win in the first game, FC have failed to beat Augsburg since. The five wins and six draws that followed have also seen Augsburg concede just six times.

Augsburg end strong

Augsburg have been a team who haven’t started quickly, but have ended strongly. They have failed to score a goal earlier than the 31st minute this season. However, Heiko Herrlich’s side have scored eight goals in the final 15 minutes (only Stuttgart, 9, have more) and earned nine points in the process.

With Daniel Caligiuri and Ruben Vargas a real threat from wide areas this season, it’s perhaps not much of a surprise that Augsburg have scored the most goals from crosses in the Bundesliga. Only Bayern Munich (6) can match Augsburg in that regard.

No team has covered as much ground through the first 13 games this season as FC Augsburg. Heiko Herrlich’s charges have covered 1,556.82km in 2020-21 thus far.
