Matchday 31

The Number Crunch: Away in Augsburg

1. FC Köln face Augsburg on Friday evening to kick start Bundesliga Matchday 31. FC want to build upon the win over Leipzig, while Augsburg aim to continue their good home form.

Jonas Hector was the FC hero in the 2:1 home win over RB Leipzig. The captain went into every tackle and also scored both goals. It was not just his second and third goals of the season, but also his first-ever Bundesliga brace.

Funkel back on the bench

After an absence of almost 18 years on the bench in Müngersdorf, Friedhelm Funkel was back as FC head coach. His last home Bundesliga game as head coach also ended in a win, 1:0 against Freiburg, in a half-finished RheinEnergieSTADION.

Half-century club. Rafael Czichos, Dominick Drexler and Kingsley Ehizibue all made their 50th Bundesliga appearance for the club at the weekend. Jorge Meré and Jannes Horn can also hit the 50-mark against Augsburg.

The two teams have met 13 times down the years in the Bundesliga. FC won the first game between the clubs in November 2011 but, since then, have failed to get the better of Augsburg. Friday’s hosts have won six match-ups, with the other six ending all-square.

One Augsburg player will remember the first meeting between the two sides with fondness. Left-back, Iago did not just score his only goal of the season but set a league record with 55 sprints in the game.

Goals are not expected to be the order of the day in Augsburg on Friday. No meeting between the two sides in the Bundesliga has produced more than three goals.

Alfred Finnbogason missed his second penalty of the season in Augsburg’s 2:0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. Before this season, the Iceland international had scored all nine penalties he was trusted with.

Augsburg on form at home

Augsburg are on a good run of form at home. They are unbeaten in their last four games at the WWK Arena, taking eight of a possible 12 points. The last time Augsburg went on such a run at home was over three years ago under Manuel Baum.

Just two teams in the Bundesliga have been booked more often than Augsburg. Heiko Herrlich’s men have seen yellow 59 times, Schalke 04 (63) and Eintracht Frankfurt (74) have picked up more cautions.

FCA goalkeeper, Rafal Gikiewicz has made 111 saves this season. Only Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega has been called into action more often (120).
